Isidore Newman School seeks a talented and dynamic Lower School Early Elementary STEAM Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year. The role of the STEAM Teacher in the Lower School is multifaceted. The successful applicant will possess excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills; demonstrate strong instructional and classroom management skills; be technologically savvy and computer literate; have an abiding interest in helping students to experience academic and social growth; be successful in working with teams; be willing to contribute to school activities outside of the assigned classroom; possess a strong understanding of the developmental level of the students they teach; and genuinely love to work with children and educators at the elementary level.
The most important qualifications include:
* A bachelor's degree or higher in elementary education or a related field * 3+ years of experience as an early elementary grade educator * Knowledge of varied pedagogy and trends in instruction and curriculum design at the elementary level * Professional orientation toward collaboration and innovation * A reflective practitioner, committed to a continuous process of self-improvement and lifelong learning * Enthusiasm for teaching children * Cultural competency demonstrating respect for diversity of identities and experiences and an orientation toward equity and inclusion * A positive attitude, self-confidence, and effective oral and written communication skills * Ability to engage, motivate, and develop student learning * Must meet and maintain all federal, state, and local requirements to work in an educational childcare setting
Significant responsibilities include:
* Collaborate with the Lower School Science Department chair and Visual Arts chair to develop and design developmentally appropriate units of study for students in grades Pre-K through 1st Grade * Design and facilitate developmentally appropriate STEAM experiences rooted in inquiry-based learning * Integrate science and visual arts to deepen understanding of concepts and encourage creative expression * Guide students through early Scientific and Engineering Practices (SEPs) such as observing, asking questions, modeling, and designing solutions * Design and facilitate developmentally appropriate, process-based art experiences that are integrated with scientific exploration, building students’ skills in observation, drawing, painting, sculpting, and constructing while using art as a tool for sense-making, creativity, and communication of ideas
* Guide students through hands-on investigations, guided discussions, and artistic expression, so children construct meaning as they ask questions and explore their surroundings
* Utilize both indoor and outdoor learning spaces (e.g., Joe’s Garden, natural areas on campus, lab spaces) * Create a classroom environment that supports exploration, collaboration, and risk-taking * Facilitate the educational and social development of the students * Create an environment of respect and rapport that is safe and conducive to learning * Use instructional time effectively * Continue to grow professionally by working with instructional coaches and administration, accepting feedback throughout the evaluation process, attending in-service and professional development/training, in and outside of the school, and reading professionally. * Communicate openly and effectively with parents including but not limited to Parents Nights, Parent Teacher Conferences, Curriculum Conversations, and signature Science and Art events * Participate in field trips and special traditions and activities of the grade levels * Maintain student records, display student work, and maintain a neat and organized environment for learning * Model appropriate presence daily and ensure that students adhere to Lower School behavioral expectations * Complete Lower School duties and responsibilities as assigned
