Isidore Newman School seeks a talented, dynamic Upper School Makerspace, Engineering, and Computer Science instructor for the 2025-2026 academic year. Qualified applicants will hold a degree in either science, mathematics, computer science or a closely related field, with prior teaching experience at the high school level preferred. Candidates must be skilled in forging strong relationships with students and families, while holding students to the traditional high academic standards characteristic of Newman’s program.
A student-centered approach is at the heart of the Newman educational program, so teachers embracing this philosophy will be a good fit. Instructors who emphasize problem solving strategies will be given priority, and demonstrated expertise in teaching regular and honors students, along with strong proficiency with technology appropriate to the classroom, are integral to this role. Additional duties and roles within the Upper School, including acting as an advisor, will be elements of this position, so a desire to be an active member of the school community outside the classroom is critical as well.
The most important qualifications include:
A bachelor's degree or higher in either science, math, computer science or a closely related field; graduate work in the discipline desired.
Expertise in programming, problem solving, algorithm development, digital logic, and related topics. Knowledge of Java, JavaScript, and Arduino languages.
Proficiency in 3D modeling, preferably Fusion 360 as well as electronics, including Arduino, sensors, LEDs, motors, and more.
Proficiency in using and servicing makerspace equipment. Ability to effectively learn and adapt to new software and technology
Highly encouraged interest in coaching the competitive robotics team
Substantial teaching experience at the upper school level with demonstrated expertise in teaching a variety of course levels and electives.
Values strong relationships with their students while maintaining high expectations in the academic program.
Cultural competency demonstrating respect for diversity of identities and experiences and an orientation toward equity and inclusion.
Professional orientation towards collaboration and innovation including strong proficiency with technology appropriate to the Science classroom.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Teaching five sections of Computer Science, Coding and Engineering including the possibility of yearlong survey courses or semester electives.
Serving as the Robotics team coach and program director.
Serving as the director of the Makerspace.
Develop and implement engaging daily lesson plans that align with the department's curriculum and school's pedagogical ethos.
Foster a growth mindset among all students.
Provide one-on-one and small group assistance to support student learning.
Communicate with parents and advisors as needed to support student learning.
Write clear, detailed report card comments that help parents understand the progress of their child in our curriculum.
Serve as advisor to a small group of students and/or participate in extracurricular activities.
Implement classroom and communication practices that foster the growth of ethical behavior, social skills, and excellent work habits.
Participate as a positive, collaborative and innovative team member who will support the mission and culture of the division and school.
