Isidore Newman School seeks a passionate, inspiring Middle School math educator for the 2023-2024 academic year with experience teaching pre-algebra and algebra. The successful applicant will possess excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills; demonstrate strong instructional and classroom management skills; be technologically savvy and computer literate; have an abiding interest in helping students to experience academic and social growth; be successful in working with teams; possess strong understanding of the developmental level of the students they teach; and genuinely love to work with students at the middle school level.
Qualified applicants will hold a degree in mathematics or a closely related field, with prior teaching experience teaching pre-algebra and algebra at the middle school level preferred. Candidates must be skilled in forging strong relationships with students and families, while holding students to the traditional high academic standards characteristic of Newman's program. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate cultural competency, respect for diversity of identities and experiences, and an orientation toward equity and inclusion.
A student-centered approach to math, with a focus on the “why” behind mathematical concepts is at the heart of the Newman math program, so teachers embracing this philosophy will be a good fit. Math teachers who employ a three-step approach to mathematical problem-solving (concrete, pictorial, abstract) will be given priority, and demonstrated expertise in teaching regular and honors students, along with strong proficiency with technology appropriate to the math classroom, are integral to this role. Additional duties and roles within the Middle School, including acting as an advisor, will be elements of this position, so a desire to be an active member of the school community outside the classroom is critical as well.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, updated resume and names of three references via the school's website.
