The Department of Art and Performing Studiesat Xavier University of Louisiana invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position teaching Design August 2023. The ideal candidate will have an MFA in Visual Arts and/or interdisciplinary arts discipline with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in design arts. Candidate should possess evidence of teaching excellence with an active proven track record in design theory with a strong emphasis using digital and practice. The successful candidate will approach the study of digital design with a focus on visual design skill development as well as a working knowledge of UX and UI theory and practice. Candidates whose research and teaching interests engage BIPOC communities in national, international, or transnational contexts are of particular interest. Those having strong interdisciplinary arts backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply, as we seek to grow our collaborations with departmental colleagues in mass communication, Business and performance studies.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Teach a 4/4 teaching load (18 contact hours), developing cross-listed curriculum in graphic design, with a strong emphasis using digital media and departmental service that contributes to our major and minor in Art.
Teaching responsibilities may include courses in three of the five listed areas of graphic design, web design, digital illustration, animation, and moving graphics.
Be prepared to lead and collaborate with colleagues on designing, shaping, and building an innovative and contemporary design program that will incorporate Xavier's mission of social justice.

Demonstrate the ability to contribute to recruitment efforts and our existing strengths in community-based artistic partnerships, mentoring of undergraduate creative scholarship, and social justice. The Xavier art department has a long history of community engagement.
Applicants will be encouraged to participate in local and national arts organizations related to their field of research.
Develop and maintain an active program of individual scholarship and creative practice.
Areas of research, practice, and teaching may include design for diverse content structures (narrative, informational, or interpretive), interaction modes (digitally- or physically-interactive), and content formats (screens, pages, objects, or environments).
Minimum Qualifications:
MFA in Visual Arts and/or interdisciplinary arts discipline with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in design arts.
At least 2 years of experience in teaching design courses.
Visual design skills with the latest software and Adobe Creative Cloud and/or Adobe eLearning Suite (most individual components) and ability to conduct workshop presentations.
Experience with at least one Web scripting language such as HTML, JavaScript, or PHP.
Understanding the theory and practice of UX and UI design strategies.
Ability to learn new professional visual art making tools and methods as technology and requirements change.
Ability to learn and use education software adopted by the university.
Preferred Qualifications:
MFA degree in visual communication/graphic design or other relevant field of study.
Demonstrated experience in a design practice.
Maintains a current web site with a comprehensive design/digital design portfolio.
Confident drawing and design skills (physical and digital).
Experience in diverse community building through the visual arts.
Experience with digital motion graphics and/or animation.
