Xavier University of Louisiana, a Catholic and Historically Black University, seeks to hire a tenure-track, full-time, assistant professor in the African American and African Cultural Studies (AAADCS) for the 2022-23 academic year beginning August 2022. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in an interdisciplinary field ranging from humanities and social sciences discipline. We seek candidates whose research and teaching focus on racial disparities in health care, health outcomes, and life expectancy, and/or address the historical, social, political, and economic experiences of persons of color within health and medicine. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree is required by May 2022.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduate students. Teaching responsibilities include teaching survey courses and developing courses within the area(s) of specialization suitable for undergraduates. Applications are encouraged from applicants with a strong background in:
mental or physical health outcomes and life expectancy
public health and police-associated violence
interactions with medical care providers
the social construction of medical knowledge and expertise
insurance coverage and health-care access
the environment (water and sanitation)
the criminalization of drug addiction and the War on Drugs
marketing practices of pharmaceutical companies
The program is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers and increasing equity and completion rates between members of different demographic groups.
Ph.D. in a with an interdisciplinary field emphasis in any area of health and medicine.
Strong commitment to teaching 4-4 teaching load.
Ability to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes
Demonstrated a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students is essential.
Established record of research productivity that complements AAADCS research.
Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population
