The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in New Orleans invites applications and nominations for Head of the Department of Internal Medicine. This position is responsible for managing the faculty, staff and residents in the Department of Internal Medicine to advance the educational, clinical and research missions of the department and the School of Medicine. The department head will report directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine and work closely with the leadership of University Medical Center–New Orleans and other hospitals and clinics at which the department faculty provide clinical services and training. Incumbent will oversee 14 subspecialty sections and work with Section Chiefs to ensure accountability of each section to the missions of the department and school. The department head will also work with leadership of our regional campuses in Baton Rouge and Lafayette, other clinical and basic science department heads and have the opportunity to work with directors of our multidisciplinary centers of excellence: the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center, Neuroscience Center, Cancer Center, and Cardiovascular Center.
The successful applicant must have good leadership abilities, effective communication skills, demonstrate a commitment to education and biomedical research, and provide a vision of excellence for the Department. A record of achievements in clinical service, administration, teaching, multi-disciplinary collaborative research and faculty mentorship are essential. The ability to promote an inclusive environment is highly valued. The successful candidate will also work with the departmental staff and dean’s office administration, the faculty group practice (LSU HealthCare Network) personnel, and the staff and administration of various hospital and clinic entities to maintain and expand the department’s clinical activities.
